African grasses are becoming major invaders of cerrado areas in Central Brazil. It has been suggested that African grasses are better competitors than native cerrado grasses in colonizing these areas. In this paper the competitive ability of one African grasses (Andropogon gayanus) and one native grass (Schizachyrium tenerum) that occur together in the cerrado was studied. Both species were grown as monoculture and mixture in greenhouse under the following treatments: clipping of plants, addition of nitrogen to the soil, clipping and addition of nitrogen, and untreated. After a period of 16 weeks plants were harvested and dry biomass was measured. The biomass data were used to calculate 3 competition indexes, used to analyze the effect of competition of both species on each other. The results show that A. gayanus was not a better competitor than S. tenerum, which seemed to have a higher effect on the growth of the African species. A. gayanus did not produce tilers in response to clipping and S. tenerum responded more to nitrogen than A. gayanus. The results suggest that. A. gayanus grows better in monoculture than in mixture, while S. tenerum grows in mixture than in monoculture. |
